Big Weather Web (NSF Funded): For one year, multiple institutions are running the same forecast modeling scenario several times (a “forecast ensemble”) with small differences to get a slightly different model outcome for each which can be used to assess forecast uncertainty for each modeled case. One challenge is the sharing of data between the institutions using cloud computing resources. Also at SD Mines, we are interested in associating forecast confidence and error to the differences in a given forecast ensemble. This provides opportunities for learning about statistics using weather forecasting models and also in inherent predictability of systems. RET opportunities are also possible in this project.
